Canadian Military Police have charged two members of the Royal Canadian Navy with multiple offences in connection with the death of a Newfoundland sailor in Halifax Harbour last year.
Petty Officer 2nd Class Greg Applin, who was a crew member of HMCS Montreal, was one of two sailors in a small inflatable boat that capsized while heading back to shore in January of 2025.
Applin was originally from Shoal Harbour West on the Great Northern Peninsula.
Applin was travelling in a rigid hull inflatable boat in Bedford Basin near Halifax on the evening of January 24, 2025, when the vessel struck a mooring buoy and capsized.
Applin and another member were rescued by a nearby vessel and taken to hospital where Applin succumbed to his injuries.
The Department of National Defence says Master Sailor David Terry, a crew member of HMCS Montreal, has been charged with one count of criminal negligence causing bodily harm, and one count of negligent performance of military duties.
Sailor First Class Alexandre Garrison, who was with the Naval Fleet School Atlantic at the time, has been charged with one count of dangerous operation causing death and one count of negligent performance of military duties.
The charges will be tried in the military justice system if they proceed to prosecution.
The information has been shared with Applin’s family who have asked for privacy as they continue to grieve.
