Provincial archaeologists expect to pay another visit to the south coast of the island to further explore known and suspected French settlements dating back to the late 1600s.
A survey of communities along the Connaigre Peninsula conducted last fall discovered a couple of sites that hold archaeological potential.
Unfortunately, modern development in larger communities that have a documented French presence has obscured sites where archaeologists would expect to find evidence of those early days of French settlement.
The greatest potential was found at the abandoned community of Grole, where both 17th century French and pre-contact evidence was found, and at Dawson’s Cove, an area that wasn’t expected to result in great interest.
Archaeologists from Memorial University are expecting to return to some of those sites this season for further exploration.
