The departments of education and public safety are looking into notification protocols after parents of students of Belanger Memorial in the Codroy Valley learned of a threat made against the school earlier this week.
The parents say the threat was not communicated to them directly and in the wake of the horrific school shootings in Tumbler Ridge in February, many who found out through social media decided to keep their kids home.
RCMP say a thorough investigation was conducted after they learned of the threat Sunday evening, which they determined was not credible.
That’s not satisfying parents, some of whom say they weren’t even aware of the threat.
Area MHA Michael King raised the matter during Question Period.
“Can the Deputy Premier update the House on what the audits and reports state in reference to communication obligations from the Department of Education?”
Deputy Premier Barry Petten says a safety audit is underway. Meanwhile, the Minister of Public Safety, Helen Conway Ottenheimer, says she’s looking into the reasons why the department did not notify residents of the threat.
“I too, will investigate this with the Department of Education and provide further information and report back to the House on this.”
