The Justice Minister says her government will be bringing forward legislation around police oversight in the fall.
Helen Conway Ottenheimer was responding to questions regarding a CBC article in which former Constable Suzanne FitzGerald criticized RNC for what was described as perceived toxicity in the force that lead to a whole host of issues.
She says it is important for officers to have a sense of safety and well-being, and while increased financial investment is part of that, legislative reform is also necessary.
Conway Ottenheimer says “considerable” work has been done since the PCs took office on that front, including an analysis of other oversight models across the country.
She says staff in her department will be working over the summer to make sure that legislation is ready for the fall sitting of the House of Assembly. She says it will include a new Police Act.
