A Labrador-based fishing company is trying to gain a share of the DFO’s northern cod allocation for the offshore.
CEO of the Labrador Fishermen’s Union Shrimp Company, or Lab Shrimp, Dwight Russell will meet with reporters today in St. John’s to discuss the company’s request for a share of Total Allowable Catch of offshore northern cod.
Russell emphasizes the principle of adjacency and the importance of northern cod in maintaining jobs and long-term economic stability on the south coast of Labrador.
Lab Shrimp, which has invested nearly $200 million in vessels, processing facilities and offshore harvesting capacity over the last decade, is owned by more than 600 local harvesters and provides jobs to more than 20 coastal communities.
Reporters have been invited to board the Nain Banker in St. John’s Harbour and discuss the matter with Russell this morning at 11:00.
VOCM News will be there.
