It was a heavier winter than normal in metro, a potential contributor to damage along the East Coast Trail. The post-winter assessment has begun, and the tally is heavy – windfall of growth along the trail about four times greater than what they usually experience.
That translates into a big hit on the finances of the East Coast Trail Association, so the organization hopes its “Trail Raiser” event next month in Mobile brings in about $100,000.
The trail consists of 336 km of coastal wilderness hiking opportunity, but Andrew Murphy, the VP of marketing and communications, says every year it seems like there is more maintenance and repair required.
They’re looking at 1,600 to 2,000 blowdowns, which are the trees being blown down along the route,” says Murphy.
