St. Mary’s Church in Harbour Mille on the Burin Peninsula will be demolished in the coming days after a last-ditch effort to save the heritage structure fell through.
The Anglican Diocese of Central Newfoundland says a potential buyer for the property came forward after an initial effort to sell the building failed to result in any offers. Plans to demolish followed but the diocese halted those plans, in good faith, however the buyer pulled out when they were unable to get insurance.
The diocese says they now know “without doubt that there is no interest in repurposing the building.”
Because of the church’s condition, arrangements have once again been made to have St. Mary’s torn down sometime between now and June 26th.
