Federal Finance Minister François-Phillippe Champagne says the federal government is very focused on establishing an energy policy to help position Canada in the global market.
The minister is in St. John’s for Energy NL’s Oil and Gas Conference.
He says energy security is intrinsically connected to food security and national security. He cites the current events in Iran as an example, which makes projects like Bay du Nord all the more important.
“You see what’s going on in the Strait of Hormuz, and I often say geography doesn’t tend to change much, and people don’t change that much either. So that choke point, if you listen to the International Energy Agency, is calling for the redesign of the energy architecture. With projects like Bay du Nord that has been announced by the premier, and we worked together on that with Minister Hutchinson as well, that’s very good news, because that’s the kind of thing we want to see…our partners in Europe want to see it as well.”
