The Chief of the Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation says his community needs a greater police presence to deal with ongoing issues.
The comments come after residents came together following the murder of a woman last week.
John Nuna, who is 29, is in custody and charged with second-degree murder.
People walked through the streets of Sheshatshiu last week to stand against violence, and call for a ban on drugs and alcohol.
Chief Eugene Hart says one of the biggest issues is the sale of bootlegged alcohol to minors.
He hopes to meet with the federal government to press for a greater police presence.
“If you don’t have time to do other things you should be doing, you should call for backup and have enforcements, like a backup team to come in for the community for a month or something just to help out a bit,” he told VOCM News.
“We need RCMP patrolling the town, even if there’s no calls. I like to see RCMP everywhere. It doesn’t have to be a dozen, but at least two or three here, like, just going around the community, be more visible.”
