The number of opioid-related deaths in Newfoundland and Labrador has dropped to its lowest level since 2019.
Data from Statistics Canada shows that there were 24 opioid-related deaths in 2025, down from 47 in 2024 and 37 in 2023.
The number of deaths per capita was among the lowest in Canada, with P.E.I., Yukon, and the Northwest Territories recording smaller numbers.
Meanwhile, the number of people who visited a hospital for opioid poisoning rose slightly in 2025, from 59 in 2024 to 61 in 2025.
Across the board, males and people over 60 were most likely to visit the hospital because of an opioid-related poisoning.
Deaths related to stimulant use dropped across the province, from 14 to 12, while hospitalizations fell from 57 in 2024 to 49 in 2025.
Health Canada says accidental poisonings were the leading cause of death for males aged 20-49 and females aged 20-39 in 2024.
