The mayor of St. Mary’s is eager to get the removal of vats of fermenting and toxic fish sauce out of the local plant which was heavily damaged in a wind storm earlier this year.
The fish sauce, which had been produced locally for the Asian market, has been sitting in the abandoned plant since the business went under two decades ago, leading to serious concerns.
Steve Ryan says the cleanup process is expected to begin any day now.
He says it will start with the cleanup of the floor, after which the sauce will be filtered using peat moss.
“It’s going to be transported in properly sealed trucks,” says Ryan, “and there’s going to be no liquid transferred. It’s going to be all solid.”
He estimates that the cleanup will require some 300 trips back and forth.
