Premier Tony Wakeham says he is disappointed that Expo Labrador 2026 has been cancelled.
The event was supposed to take place over the next three days, but was cancelled at the last-minute because a resolution has not yet been reached in an ongoing dispute between the Innu Nation and the province.
Wakeham, Indigenous relations minister Lela Evans, and area MHA Keith Russell met with Innu leadership earlier this week and brought forward several proposals – which were not accepted.
In a statement released on social media, Wakeham says he is disappointed that the expo has been cancelled, recognizing the “significant impact” the decision has on all involved.
He says considerable time, effort, and resources go in to putting off an event of that scale and he “(appreciates) the difficult circumstances involved.”
