A retired veteran is demanding an apology from the premier in response to Minister Andrea Barbour’s speeches at Beaumont Hamel last week.
Barbour delivered a number of speeches in France as part of ceremonies marking Memorial Day and the unveiling of the Danger Tree monument at Beaumont Hamel.
Her remarks included a number of stumbles, and the mispronunciation of Beaumont Hamel.
Greg Janes told VOCM Open Line that former service members are “upset and angry” over how “ill-prepared” Barbour appeared to be during the address.
“In the eyes of veterans, we expect more from our ministers. We elect our ministers to represent us to the fullest.”
“I don’t blame Minister Barbour. The buck stops at the Premier’s desk. It’s on his watch. He should have known what he was doing…the apology needs to come from the Premier himself.”
Premier Tony Wakeham says Barbour did not intend to make a mistake.
“She acknowledges that she made a mistake, she’s apologized for it, she’s taken responsibility for it, and she will learn from it.”
