A man who has spent most of his life in the marine safety business would like to see the Transportation Safety Board investigate the fishing tragedy off Cape St. John this week that claimed two lives.

Three fishermen were in the boat Tuesday afternoon when it sank. Only one survived.

Merv Wiseman, chair of the Food Fishery Committee, says he has no idea what went wrong but he’s concerned about the number of tragedies on the water. It was only a few years ago that three fishermen from the nearby community of Fleur-de-Lys perished.

He is not confident that the industry and the government authorities who lay down the rules are learning enough from each marine-related accident to reduce the risk of being at sea.

“Transport Canada would be a very key player here in terms of what their analysis would be and what they’re recommendations would be in order to prevent this or mitigate risk,” says Wiseman.
