Today is a big day in the town of St. Mary’s.
Vats of fish sauce, left to putrefy in a plant abandoned decades ago, will finally be removed today – much to the relief of the town council and local residents.
The removal has been a long time coming as responsibility for the cleanup took years to determine.
The wheels finally started moving in recent months and Transportation Minister Barry Petten, who visited the area yesterday to announce some infrastructure funding, says the relief was palpable.
He says everyone he spoke with was “really excited” and appreciative for the action being taken. “It’s been a real black mark on a small community like St. Mary’s…there’s a lot of happy faces.”)
