The annual Tickle Swim for Mental Health is set for tomorrow and the weather outlook is promising.
Each year for the last 14, people have gathered on the shoreline in Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s to swim across the Tickle to Bell Island to raise awareness and support for mental health.
Guest host Linda Swain on VOCM Open Line spoke with Courtney Bartlett, a member of the Tickle Swim Committee, about the possible dangers of the swim and the safety measures taken to mitigate any hazards.
She says it’s important to think about the swell of the water and it’s possible to encounter other creatures in the water such as jellyfish. However, Bartlett says each competitor has a support person to help guide them through any problems.
Weather, wind and currents are always a consideration and the decision on whether conditions are favourable to go ahead will come tomorrow morning.
