The company behind a proposed $4 billion mining development in Labrador West is pleased to be added to a list of projects chosen to receive federal government support.
The Kami Project has been named to the First and Last Mile Fund for planning and feasibility work on the transportation and energy infrastructure needed ahead of project development.
Champion Iron acquired the Kami Project southwest of Lab City and Wabush in 2021, and formed a partnership with Japanese companies Nippon Steel and Sojitz which hold minority positions of 30 per cent and 19 percent.
The permitting process for the project is ongoing and a definitive feasibility study is expected by the end of the year.

Meanwhile, Champion is welcoming the Churchill Falls agreement announced last week which it says will support mining development in the Labrador Trough, – home to some of the world’s “highest-purity iron ore.”
The company also welcomes the federal government’s decision to refer the Labrador Trough to the Major Projects Office, calling it an “important step.”
