A building that was once earmarked to be converted into a courthouse in Stephenville Crossing is being demolished.
The previous Liberal administration had announced that the Martin Gallant Building, a former College of the North Atlantic Campus, would be converted into a new facility that would include a courthouse and other government services.
The current government recently completed further environmental and structural assessments of the building, and determined that it should be torn down.
It says the assessments uncovered several issues including contaminated soil, the presence of lead paint, and “significant structural deficiencies” that would require “extensive remediation and reconstruction work” before the building could be considered safe.
The current government points the finger at its predecessors, accusing them of advancing the redevelopment plan “without the level of due diligence and site analysis that would typically be expected before committing to a project of this scale and complexity.”
The province will now move forward with plans to decommission and demolish the structure.
