The RNC say they are aware of devices that allow thieves to boost the signal from key fobs in order to steal vehicles, but have no evidence to suggest that the devices are being used in this region.
Police say in most of the cases involving stolen vehicles in the metro region the evidence points to crimes of opportunity.
The Constabulary says either the key fob was left in the stolen vehicle or in a parked vehicle nearby—and in some cases, the key fob was hung up or kept near an open front door, close enough to allow thieves an opportunity to remove the vehicle from the driveway.
