The justice minister is refusing to comment on reports that two RNC officers involved in a fatal shooting two years ago are preparing to return to active duty.
That’s despite the fact that an outside investigation by the Ontario Provincial Police is still ongoing.
27-year-old Jorden McKay was shot and killed by a rookie officer outside a house in Corner Brook in November of 2018. McKay had a criminal record and was reportedly approaching the officers with a sharp weapon when he was shot and killed.
The officers were removed from frontline work and the OPP were called in, with this province’s new serious incident response team overseeing their work.
Justice Minister Steve Crocker said he understands the RNC has concluded its own investigation but wouldn’t go beyond that.
Crocker confirmed SIRT’s involvement but said the government would not normally comment on the operations of the RNC or RCMP.
