The leader of the NL Alliance says it would be dangerous and irresponsible for Premier Andrew Furey to call an election before the spring, let alone this week.
Speculation is rampant that the writ will be dropped any day now as the governing Liberals seek majority rule that would make it easier to implement legislation and policy.
However, NL Alliance Leader Graydon Pelley says the public doesn’t have enough details about the critical issues facing the province, such as the economic recovery team report and the next budget. He questions how people can make educated or informed decisions on who should lead the province for the next four years if there’s no information before them.
Pelley also says running campaigns will involve interactions among thousands of people, which flies in the face of COVID-19 protocols.
Meanwhile, political parties in the province continue to finalize their rosters of candidates for the next provincial election.
The Liberals are calling for nominations in seven districts this week, including Grand Falls Windsor – Buchans, Humber – Bay of Islands, Mount Pearl – Southlands, Mount Pearl North, St. Barbe – L’Anse aux Meadows, Stephenville – Port au Port and Windsor Lake.
The Tories, meanwhile, will select candidates in the districts of Burgeo – La Poile, Humber – Gros Morne and Mount Pearl Southlands this evening, as well as Placentia – St. Mary’s and St. George’s – Humber later in the week.
VOCM News has requested but had not received a similar candidate update from the NDP as of publishing this article.
