Eastern Newfoundland is in for its first serious blast of winter later this week, according to Environment Canada.
Heavy snow is expected to start early Thursday and continue throughout the day and night and into Friday. The snow will also be accompanied by strong northerly winds that will create blizzard-like conditions.
Environment Canada meteorologist Wanda Batten says it’s too early to give precise accumulation amounts but she doesn’t expect a repeat of one year ago.
She says it will be nothing like what was experienced this time last year, adding she’s not expecting to see a “Snowmageddon 2.”
However, she says it will feel significant since it’s been a relatively quiet winter so far—on the east coast at least.
Batten says different weather models are showing different numbers, but early estimates put snowfall in the range of 20 to 50 centimetres from Thursday into Saturday.
St. John’s May Extend Parking Ban
With a special weather statement issued for Thursday, St. John’s City Council are reminding residents to be aware of the regulations in place for overnight parking.
Councillor Sandy Hickman says that in the event of a major winter storm, the ban may be extended to 24 hours.
He says they’ve been warned of impending snow accumulation Thursday, so residents should be aware of the overnight parking ban in place. He also says that if there is heavy snowfall, the ban may be extended and residents should be aware of the city’s website and social media for updates.
