The interim leader of the PC Party is calling for government action to address the ferry service on Bell Island.
David Brazil, who is also the MHA for the area, says that despite offering numerous suggestions and solutions over the last few months the service has “eroded” to the point where workers, patients travelling for healthcare services, and businesses are suffering.
He says poor planning, management of crewing, and a poor relationship with Transport Canada are some of the main issues.
Currently, service across the Tickle is down to one vessel while the Flanders is on drydock in St. John’s. Brazil notes that the Bell Island ferry run has 60 per cent of ferry traffic in the province, yet is using one of the smallest ferries during peak season.
Brazil says the ferry service right now is the worst it’s been “in decades.”
One solution, Brazil says, would be to put a shore-based manager in place in Portugal Cove, which he believes would save “hundreds of thousands of dollars.”
He explains that a shore-based manager would make the service more efficient, and ensure operations are in order to provide the services.
Meanwhile, a community meeting is being held on Bell Island at 5 p.m. on Sunday to discuss the situation.
