Two properties belonging to the Archdiocese of St. John’s will be going up for sale in the coming weeks, the first of many properties to be put on the market.

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St. John’s says it is continuing to work to address the abuse at Mount Cashel Orphanage in the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s, for which the NL Court of Appeal held the Church responsible earlier this year.

Archbishop Peter Hundt shared a statement on Sunday which was read aloud at masses throughout the diocese.

Hundt says the Archdiocese of St. John’s is beginning a major appraisal process to determine the sale of value of the significant real estate properties and buildings of the Church. Hundt says while the process is ongoing, certain properties will be placed on the market for sale.

Two parcels of vacant land will be put up for sale in the coming weeks, the Archbishop’s residence in Outer Cove and the Mount St. Francis property on Merrymeeting Road.

Hundt says the detailed evaluation of both the amounts owing to the claimants and the value of the Archdiocesan assets is still ongoing.
