The most common complaints the Newfoundland and Labrador Human Rights Commission hears in regards to ageism in the province have to do with the workplace.
According to Executive Director Carey Majid, that could include things like a lack of promotion opportunities for older employees, a lack of training, or simply being looked over for a job in favour of a younger applicant.
According to Majid, the best defence against ageism is education.
She says more education needs to happen about human rights protection, stereotypes, and bias. She believes education will go a long way in addressing ageism, as well as helping out the organizations that advocate for seniors’ rights.
