The town of Gander is nearing the driest summer on record.
Meteorologist Justin Boudreau says as of August 23, Gander was just 19.9 mm away from tying the record set in 1961 when just 118.7 mm of rain was recorded for all of June, July, and August.
Boudreau says with a week to go until the end of the month, it’s not likely that record will be broken.
It would only take a single day of rain to put Gander over the 118.7 mm threshold according to Boudreau. He laughs “it’s a bit of nail-biter as far as vaguely interesting weather stuff goes.”
Water levels on the Gander River are roughly on par with those seen back in 1961.
In the meantime, it’s been an unusually dry summer for most of the eastern portion of the island with reports throughout the region of some wells going dry.
Brief driest summer on record update for #Gander.
We're currently 19.9 mm away from tying the record set in 1961 of 118.7 mm for June, July, August. Looking ahead at the next 8 days, and I hope this doesn't devastate anyone, we may fail at this somewhat undesirable trophy. #nlwx
