It’s nearly back to school for children across the province, and many are headed out to buy school supplies in preparation for the big day.
That’s why Bridges to Hope launched its ninth annual Bag to School Campaign this summer, to help families in need.
Williams says the campaign is no small feat. Pre-pandemic they were supplying about 600 backpacks to kids, this year they are hoping to get at least 300, as even more families are on the wait list. He says it will cost Bridges to Hope about $20,000 to get the bags together.
Williams says the bags themselves are quite expensive, and filling them with school supplies can run anywhere from $40 to $70. He says some of the families they serve have six or seven children, which would add up quickly.
Williams says the need is dire, as many people looking for bags have never availed of their services before. He says this time of year can be a big financial hurdle for families, and providing them a bag can free up some money to go towards new clothes.
The campaign is still taking donations, Williams says those interested can find more information at bridgestohope.ca.
