The Department of Education is taking the concerns recently raised by the province’s Child and Youth Advocate under advisement.
Jackie Lake Kavanagh outlined concerns surrounding the need for a Code of Conduct for teachers within the Schools Act, outlining behavioural expectations and consequences for teachers and school staff.
Government last spring announced that the English School District will be folded into the department. The NLESD says it has a Code of Conduct for all employees, as does the Teachers’ Union.
Education Minister Tom Osborne says any report or complaint which affects a student’s ability to learn in a safe and supportive school environment is taken “very seriously” by the school districts.
Meanwhile, the Opposition is calling for immediate action on a recent call for a Code of Conduct for teachers.
Opposition Education critic Barry Petten says students are among the most vulnerable in society and deserve every protection both inside and outside the classroom.
He’s urging government to move forward with regulatory or legislative changes without delay.
