Residents of St. John’s will be able to ring in the new year with personal fireworks, but after today, their use will be strictly limited.
For years, the city has been fielding complaints from residents who don’t appreciate the disruption caused by fireworks being set off at all hours throughout the year.
St. John’s city council passed the new bylaw in June.
It limits the use of personal fireworks to New Year’s Eve and Canada Day as of midnight tonight.
Even on those two days their use will be restricted to between 7:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m.
Special event approval can be granted to other occasions during the year.
Councillor Maggie Burton says they’re relying on the public to notify them of any violations.
Anyone with a concern about fireworks is asked to call 311 and an inspector will carry out an investigation.
A fine of up to $5000 dollars could be issued if the person is convicted in court.
