The PC Party is raising concerns about transparency following yesterday’s update on the cyber attack that struck the healthcare system last fall.
Yesterday, Health Minister John Haggie and Eastern Health CEO David Diamond announced that over 200,000 files, some of which contained personal information, had been taken from an Eastern Health IT drive.
Diamond says they were first notified of the stolen files on February 25. That’s raising concerns from interim PC Leader David Brazil.
He says government sat on the information for over a month, and they haven’t done anything to assure people that safeguards have been put in place to make sure that it doesn’t happen again.
Brazil says they aren’t asking for every detail as they understand some things need to be kept quiet. However, they want to know how the situation will affect people and what preventative measures have been put in place.
Regarding the length of time which it took government to disclose the information, Diamond says the delay is indicative of how complex the situation is and how difficult it is to work through data bases of such magnitude.
Minister Haggie says there may be some information that can never be revealed.
He says there are several investigations ongoing, including one by the privacy commissioner, and says all will release public reports in due time. However, he says that, for security reasons, there is some information that won’t be released.
