The provincial government will continue discussions with the federal government on increased funding to help improve health outcomes and the social determinants of health.
Health Minister John Haggie was responding to the release of the Health Accord’s implementation plan which focuses heavily on concepts like a basic income to help address poverty and its impact on health.
The Health Accord says that will rely heavily on help from Ottawa.
Haggie says they’re going back to the table on health transfers, the amount the province gets, and the way in which it is calculated.
He says changes to health transfers made 10-12 years ago “didn’t serve this province particularly well.” He suspects Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development, John Abbott will also be reaching out to Ottawa in connection with income guarantees and income support.
