Police are continuing to investigate a sudden death and connected incidents in Campbellton early yesterday morning.
Around 2:30 a.m., police were called to a home invasion at a residence on Route 340 in the town and a nearby single-vehicle crash, which occurred before the invasion.
Police found that a man had knocked on the door of the home, and then forced his way inside and assaulted the occupant who answered the door. The victim ran from the home for help, but returned to find that the upper level of the home and their vehicle in the driveway were on fire.
Firefighters extinguished both blazes and found a dead man in a room on the upper level. He was not a resident of the home.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is engaged and the Major Crimes investigation is ongoing.
Residents can expect an increased police presence in the area over the next few days, however there is no risk to public safety.
Anyone with information is asked to contact RCMP Major Crimes Unit West (at 709-637-4420) or Crime Stoppers (at 1-800-222-8477).
