Members of the Registered Nurses Union of this province convened on the field across from the Confederation Building this morning to launch their latest campaign to bring attention to what they are calling the crisis in healthcare.
Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners stood in solidarity this morning, against a poignant backdrop of dozens of healthcare uniforms hung on a lengthy clothesline just beyond the steps of Confederation Building to signal how RNU members are feeling—hung out to dry.
Union President Yvette Coffey says the healthcare system currently has 750 vacancies for nurses in the system. She calls working conditions horrendous with nurses facing violence, mandated overtime, and the reliance on agency nurses which Coffey calls demoralizing to members.
Coffey believes efforts from government to amend the beleaguered healthcare system have not made a meaningful difference.
Coffey says the system is still slipping and even with all government has done, more needs to happen in terms of retention.
