Workplace NL is offering a few tips on precautions to take when working in the heat.
Hot and humid conditions increase the risk of heat stress, especially for those who work in commercial kitchens, laundries, bakeries, construction and farming.
Early warning signs of heat stress include headache, nausea, dizziness, weakness, irritability, thirst and heavy sweating.
If you have the symptoms of heat stress, get to a cool or shaded area for rest and drink plenty of water. If the symptoms don’t improve rapidly, then seek medical attention.
Ways to reduce the risk of heat stress include the use of fans or air conditioning, wearing lightweight, light-coloured, loose-fitting clothes, taking frequent breaks, staying hydrated with cool beverages with no caffeine or alcohol, use sunscreen and wear a wide-brimmed hat when working in the sun.
Workplace NL also recommends that workers reduce physically-demanding activities during peak temperature periods, and create shade with screens or umbrellas.
