Swimming holes and pools are busy places these days as people go to extra lengths to cool off from the heat and humidity.
Heat warnings are out for much of the island, including the St. John’s area as well as parts of southeastern Labrador. Temperatures are hovering around 30 degrees with a humidex in the high thirties to low forties.
It was warm last summer but prolonged stretches of hot weather—some would call it a heat wave—were rare.
Meteorologist David Neil of the Gander Weather Office says the moderate southwesterly flow from the southern Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico is the reason.
Generally, three days of temperatures of at least 30 degrees would qualify as a heat wave. Central Newfoundland is into its third day.
Meanwhile, the Party at the Park in St. John’s tomorrow has been cancelled outright. It was postponed to tomorrow but the City of St. John’s cites the hot weather tomorrow. The Bowring Park event has been cancelled until next year.
Gathering Place Providing Relief From Heat
The Gathering Place says it has been a challenging few days with the extreme heat for those it services.
Kim Grant, Associate Executive Director, says they are lucky to have an air conditioned building, and are trying to encourage guests to take time out of the sun.
She says they provide water and sunscreen on a regular basis, along with hats and light clothing if needed. She says they also will arrange medical attention if someone is greatly affected by the heat.
