Safety NL says drivers and pedestrians both have a role to play when it comes to staying safe on our roadways.
President Sean Kelly says far too often, they hear of incidents involving drivers going too fast and not paying attention to what’s in front of them.
But, he says both pedestrians and drivers are responsible for keeping an eye on the road.
He says it’s common to see people stepping out between vehicles and drivers stopping for jaywalkers—something that is risky as other drivers might not be as courteous to let someone cross.
Kelly is reminding drivers that they are required to let pedestrians cross the entire length of the street before moving on.
Often, drivers let someone get about halfway through a crosswalk before they zoom through. He says that’s a ticketable offence that is not enforced often enough.
