Sharing the Harvest NL is reporting a successful few weeks for fish donations to local foodbanks.
The organization donates game meat, fish and foraged berries to foodbanks to provide traditional Newfoundland and Labrador foods to those who need it.
Over the past month, the organization has made donations of capelin and cod to Bridges to Hope, Connections for Seniors and the Single Parent Association.
Executive Director and Founder of Sharing the Harvest NL, Barry Fordham, told VOCM Open Line with Tim Powers, they have even been able to provide to individual seniors that have messaged him about capelin.
One benefit of the program, says Fordham, is that the food is healthy, which would normally cost a premium in grocery stores.
He says it is all free-range, organic, wild meat and fish. He says blueberries are up next if they have enough financial support. Last year, they were able to donate five gallons.
Capelin are rolling in and so are the donations! ?? Thanks to Sharing The Harvest NL, we'll be able to share lots of fresh fish with local families. pic.twitter.com/FmXCblwHsE
