As New Year’s Eve approaches, a pop-up fireworks store on Kenmount Road in St. John’s is lighting up the holiday spirit, and according to owner George Xidos, business is booming.
With the festive season in full swing, customers are soliciting Discount Fireworks, eager to add a spark to their year-end celebrations.
The store’s shelves are lined with an array of colorful fireworks, but the hot ticket items this year are what Xidos calls ‘cakes’—a type of multi-shot firework that transforms the sky into a spray of color and sound—with a 10-minute display likely to set you back about $300.

But with great spectacle comes great responsibility. Xidos stresses the importance of safety first, advising customers to carefully follow the instructions on each package and to set off fireworks at least 20 metres away from people and buildings.
“A good fireworks show is getting yourself a nice bunch of cakes, make sure you read the labels, and know exactly what to do before you set them off,” he said. “Expose all the wicks before you go outside, and make sure you check all your distances to make sure they’re all within safety limits.”
Discount Fireworks will be open for business until 8:00 p.m. on New Year’s Eve.
