Today marks the 50th anniversary of a flag that’s come to symbolize the majesty and resilience of Labrador.
The tri-colour Labrador flag—in blue, green and white and featuring a sprig of the iconic black spruce—was designed by Michael Martin, the MHA for Labrador South, in 1973. It was part of a project to commemorate the 25th anniversary of NL’s Confederation.
Although not officially recognized, the flag flies at the Labrador borders with Quebec, at municipal and provincial government offices, and is proudly displayed by residents and hoisted during a variety of community events.
A variety of events are planned throughout the year to mark the anniversary.
