Today is what used to be known as Autism Awareness Day, but advocates and groups, including the NL Autism Society, have dropped the awareness tag.
Paul Walsh, CEO at the Society, says April 2 is now simply known as National Autism Day because people are already aware of the neurological disorder.
He says they also recognize April as National Autism Month, with a focus on furthering one’s understanding of autism and celebrating their successes.
“I just think there’s a more open and willing conversation around autism these days,” says Walsh. He believes the key to furthering one’s understanding and improving society for autistics is to listen to their lived experiences.
A proclamation is being signed by Health Minister Tom Osborne to proclaim April as National Autism Month. Events will also be taking place across the province throughout the month. More details can be found online.
