Some of the Newfoundland Turnip’s most viral hits and more are now available in physical format.
The social media page, formed in 2015, has taken off over the past few years for satirical posts and memes referencing local culture and current events. The man behind the Turnip, who prefers to be known as just Mike, signed a deal with Flanker Press to publish ‘The Newfoundland Turnip Book of Memes Volume 1’—which is now on store shelves.
Mike says in order to fill the book, they hauled all the Turnip content from Facebook and began the lengthy process of organizing them into categories, covering everything from Snowmageddon and the pandemic, to holidays and events.
“I didn’t realize how much we had on there,” he said after spending three months sorting through memes and skits. The goal was to weed out the best material that he thought would go over well with the audience.
He tells VOCM News that feedback on the book has been positive, and people have been reaching out from all over the country looking to purchase a copy.
Most people, he says, are Newfoundlanders living away, but not all. He says some of those interested have never been to the province, but have become fascinated with the Turnip’s content. Mike says Flanker is now working to get the book out to retailers across Canada.
If the first volume of the Turnip’s book is a success, Mike says you can expect to see new volumes in the future.
