The union which represents workers at the Braya fuel production plant in Come By Chance is calling for an inquiry into the explosion almost two years ago which killed one man and injured several others.
Occupational Health and Safety has just laid charges against the owner of the refinery and a third party contractor working on site at the time of the explosion—September 2, 2022.
RCMP are also investigating from the perspective of whether criminal charges are warranted.
Glenn Nolan, President of Local 9316 of the United Steelworkers Union at Braya, says yesterday was a difficult one for workers with formal charges being laid by Occupational Health and Safety.
Nolan is calling on government to launch an inquiry into the incident in the name of safety and prevention. Government ordered an inquiry 25 years ago following an explosion which resulted in the deaths of two workers.
He says such an inquiry will point out where the failures were, so it’s good for the workers and good for the company. He says it’s now about trying to get back at somebody—it’s a step which should benefit everyone at the refinery including the owners and contractors.
