Weekend celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the Labrador flag begin this evening.
The iconic blue, green and white flag with the sprig of black spruce, was designed by a group led by Labrador South MHA Michael Martin, in part, to vex then Premier Joey Smallwood.
It has since been embraced as a potent symbol of Labrador and adorns flag poles throughout the region.
Celebrations marking the flag’s half-century begin this evening at 6:00 with a reception, live music and flag-raising ceremony at the Labrador Interpretation Centre in North West River.
Events continue on Saturday with the North West River Beach Festival at the Lester Burry Memorial Park. Flags will be distributed to the public from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on the festival grounds.
