A/C units and fans will be cranked to the max this week as a heat dome takes over parts of the island and Labrador.
Environment Canada has heat warnings out for central and northeastern Newfoundland as well as parts of the west coast, and regions of Labrador including the coast from Hopedale to southern Labrador and Upper Lake Melville with daytime temperatures consistently in the 30s. With the humidex, it will feel like the temperature is in the mid-to-high 30s.
The heat will break in Labrador early this week, but that’s not the case for the island with high temperatures expected until at least mid-week and possibly into the weekend.
Meteorologist Justin Boudreau of the Gander Weather Office tweeted yesterday that Gander could experience a first. The town has not had four consecutive 30-degree days in its recorded history but will flirt with the achievement this week.
It’ll be uncomfortable trying to get some shuteye as the mercury will be sitting in the low-twenties in the overnight hours.
Gander meteorologist Allison Sheppard says it will be a significant stretch of hot weather. She says the hot weather continues right into August.
