The Rotary Club of St. John’s managed to bestow accolades on two firefighters yesterday for their courageous acts.
But as in past years, it wasn’t easy in an occupation where those attributes are in the job description.
Firefighters Richard Hynes and Dale Pittman shared this year’s firefighter of the year award during the Rotary event at the Holiday Inn.
It was in recognition for their selfless efforts in saving the life of a woman from a house fire in the city last year.
But as their peers and families looked on, they insisted the other two dozen first responders share in the recognition as well.
Hynes says he was completely humbled by the award.
“I never entered the fire service thinking that one day I’m going to be given an award for the job I’m doing on a daily basis,” he said. “So I appreciate it, it is humbling, I’m filled with gratitude, and I really appreciate the recommendation for the award from the captain (A.J. St. Croix) that night.”
The Rotary Club of St. John’s initiated the Firefighter of the Year Award in 2015.
