The provincial fisheries minister says the federal government’s decision to reopen the northern cod fishery in Newfoundland and Labrador disregards the scientific advice.
Byrne spoke before the Federal Standing Committee for Fisheries and Oceans, which is reviewing the decision to reopen the commercial northern cod fishery earlier this week.
The province has been pushing for joint management of the fishery in waters adjacent to the province’s coast.
Bryne told the committee that science, and sustainability is paramount in fisheries management, something he says the federal government can’t seem to grasp.
“The only political win that can ever be created is from a fishery that has been honestly rebuilt on a foundation of sustainability,” says Byrne.
