Relatively favourable conditions are helping crews battle a wildfire near Kingston in Conception Bay North.
Jeff Monty, a fire duty officer with the province, believes the current contingent of waterbombers and ground crews should be enough to handle the blaze, but it’s too early to change the status from out-of-control to being held.
Forecasted Southwest winds at 40 km/h have delivered as promised, meaning ground crews have been able to work while waterbombers fight the fire from above.

Monty says residents in the area will remain under an evacuation alert for the time being.
“We’ve been very fortunate that the winds have allowed us to work the edge closest to the community and just put out a lot of holes and work to protect that line,” he told VOCM News.
“So the winds stay the same way there, that’s favourable for our crews to continue working throughout the day.”
There is no word on the cause of the fire.
