The summer holiday season could present opportunities for thieves.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says summer typically sees the highest volume of reported incidents of break and enters.
Police say break and enters are often crimes of opportunity so there are some precautions property owners can take to avoid being targeted by thieves.
They include keeping valuables out of sight, and ensuring that ladders, garden equipment and work tools are removed from your property as they can be used to break in.
RNC say it’s not a good idea to hide keys in secret places; instead, leave your house key with a trusted neighbour or friend.
Police also recommend securing the home and surroundings, having a well-lit exterior, placing valuables in a safety deposit box if you are going to be away from the home, use timers or leave a radio on and arrange for someone you trust to check on your home, keep the lawn mowed and move vehicles around.
