A province-wide fire ban is in effect until the second week of September.
Forestry Minister Lisa Dempster made the announcement during a news conference earlier today for an update on two forest fires on the Avalon Peninsula.
She says they will make a decision on whether or not to lift the ban on September 7th.
A province-wide fire ban is now in effect in Newfoundland and Labrador and will remain in place until at least Sept. 7, when a determination will be made about its status. More info:https://t.co/Tncl9JO1St #GovNL @GovNL @JPS_GovNL @OLA_GovNL pic.twitter.com/CnDV87T660

There have been 192 forest fires in the province so far this year, compared to 58 by the same time last year, which Premier John Hogan calls “historic” numbers.
Dempster says it has been a “fire season like no other,” noting that the number of fires is putting a “great stress” on communities, services, and the environment, which is why the ban is needed.
She says it helps reduce the risk. She notes that anyone who violates the fire ban could face a fine of at least $1,000.
