The St. John’s Regional Fire Department says it’s a good idea to give your yard some attention as the hot, dry summer continues to drive the fire index.
There is a ban on illegal outdoor fires, such as those set in an open pit, and the province is about to increase the penalty for violating the ban to a maximum of $50,000.
St. John’s Fire Chief Sherry Colford says people should take steps to minimize risk, especially in conditions such as those which exist this summer, including cleaning up brush and other flammable debris.
“We don’t encourage you to plant plants next to your house – keep them a safe distance away. Anything that’s leaning against the house that could be combustible should probably be removed, she says.
